[MARCH 9, 2005]  HARTSBURG -- In IESA eighth-grade regional volleyball action last night at Hartsburg, the fifth-seeded Wolverines of West Lincoln-Broadwell pulled out a three-game match victory over the No. 1-seeded Hartsburg-Emden squad to advance to the regional final tonight.

In another hard-fought three-game match, the third-seeded squad from Carroll Catholic defeated the second-seeded Panthers from Chester-East Lincoln. Carroll received excellent, "never give up" play from its entire squad, with notable performances by Samantha Lowman, Hannah McShane and Amy Kelley. Carroll also moves on to the regional final at Hartsburg tonight. The championship match is set to begin at 6 p.m.

It was quite an amazing night for the underdog Wolverines of West Lincoln-Broadwell. Because of the new (hard to comprehend) IESA format, all preliminary regional matches are played on one night, and only the championship match is played on a separate night. Because of this format, WL-B was faced with the daunting task of playing two matches in one night, with the second match being against the top-seeded team and with only an hour in between matches. WL-B rose to the challenge.

WL-B won its first match of the evening by defeating a good Zion Lutheran team 16-14, 15-9. The Wolverines' statistics were as follows:

Points
Molly Goodrich, 6
Brittany Colby, 3
Hilary Hobler, 4
Laura Aughenbaugh, 8
Felicia Jackson, 1
Leah Shirley, 6

Aces
Molly Goodrich, 3
Brittany Colby, 1
Laura Aughenbaugh, 2
Felicia Jackson, 1

Kills
Molly Goodrich, 1
Brittany Colby, 5
Hilary Hobler, 14
Laura Aughenbaugh, 6
Felicia Jackson, 6

Set assists
Molly Goodrich, 26

As the final match of the evening began, it seemed that Hartsburg would have an easy time with the somewhat weary WL-B team. In game one, using excellent serving, Hartem won 15-4. But then the tide turned. In game two WL-B and Hartem played even to 7-7 and then the Wolverines began to separate themselves. The final score of game two was WL-B 15, Hartem 11.

Game three of the match was a fight to the finish. WL-B went up early in the match and remained ahead until the score was 14-11. Hartsburg was not about to go down easily and scored the next three points to tie the score at 14-14. After a couple of exchanges, Hartsburg also got the next point to go up 15-14. WL-B was able to fight off defeat to tie the score at 15-all. The Wolverines then pulled off the upset by scoring the next two points to win the match 17-15.

In the match against Hartem the WL-B stats were as follows:

Points
Molly Goodrich, 7
Brittany Colby, 4
Hilary Hobler, 9
Laura Aughenbaugh, 2
Felicia Jackson, 1
Leah Shirley, 12

Aces
Molly Goodrich, 3
Hilary Hobler, 2
Leah Shirley, 2

Kills
Brittany Colby, 7
Hilary Hobler, 21
Laura Aughenbaugh, 15
Felicia Jackson, 9

Set assists
Molly Goodrich, 24
Leah Shirley, 1

Good luck to both teams in tonight's final match!
