"This grant program through our
Division of Education is a tremendous resource for Illinois
teachers," said Joel Brunsvold, director of the Department of
Natural Resources. "Through generous contributions from the Daniel
F. and Ada L. Rice Foundation of Skokie and the Independence Tube
Corporation of Chicago, more than 3,000 students will be able to
visit natural areas in our state and learn about wildlife and other
topics firsthand." The program
allows Illinois teachers to apply for grants to take students to the
outdoors to study some aspect of Illinois' biodiversity. The
learning activities must be related to the Illinois Learning
Standards from the Illinois State Board of Education. Two grant
application periods are available each year, with the fall deadline
on Oct. 15 and the spring deadline on Feb. 15. Funding is
administered by the Illinois Conservation Foundation and covers such
expenses as transportation and substitute teachers.
"Eighty-four applications were
received for this grant period," said Jeff Vose, administrator of
the IDNR Division of Education. "A total of $14,711 is being made
available to schools from throughout Illinois, involving students
from kindergarten through high school."
