Coal processing discovery has environmental benefits for nation, economic benefits to the state     Send a link to a friend

[MARCH 18, 2005]  CHAMPAIGN -- In the past, in the process of mining, 20 percent of coal was lost as dust. Now, a team of researchers at the Illinois Geological Survey, a division of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, has discovered a method to recover that dust. The result is a coal that is freer of impurities, such as sulfur. The dust is also no longer a waste product requiring disposal.

A private company, Dynamic Separations, based in Champaign, is now using the patented method. A portion of the profits from the patent is returned to the state of Illinois.
