School traffic flow
Principal Rebecca Cecil of
Washington-Monroe School met with Mayor Beth Davis, Alderman Buzz
Busby and city engineer Mark Mathon to try to put together a plan
that would ease traffic and increase safety around the school at the
beginning and end of the school day.
The group determined to add new
signage and yellow traffic markings. The biggest change will be a
loading and unloading zone at the school's main entry. This will be
especially beneficial for students getting musical instruments in
and out of vehicles.
Property annexations
- New Wal-Mart property
The property annexation agreement where Wal-Mart intends to build
was approved. The 69.741-acre area approved begins just west of
Burger King.
- Insurance Auto Auctions property
The 20-acre site of Insurance Auto Auctions Inc., which is at the
end of Madigan Drive off Route 10-Woodlawn Rd., was accepted into
city limits.
- Madison Drive
The drive into the business subdivision that was owned by Vernon
and Janet Klockenga and Burwell LP Logan County properties was
annexed into the city, and the 70-by-90-foot section of Madigan
Drive was turned over to the city.

Future fire equipment
The fire department was given
permission to accept a matching Federal Emergency Management Agency
grant. The grant covers apparatus that can be added to a firetruck,
such as a ladder or pumper. The city's portion of the $600,000 grant
is $60,000.
Verl Prather explained that this in
not in this year's budget but will be next year.
The acceptance of the grant needed
to be completed now. How it will be used can be determined later.
Many of these grants are drying up with cuts in the federal budget
and a reduction in homeland security funds that have been so readily
available up to now.
All of the above met with 100
percent approval from the council.
Alderman Benny Huskins remains out
for a family illness. Mayor Beth Davis was absent to attend the
funeral of a close friend, Gary Thompson.
