Winter hours announced for state historic sites       Send a link to a friend

[NOV. 19, 2005]  SPRINGFIELD -- Winter hours of operation for state historic sites administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency began Nov. 1.

Many sites are closing at 4 p.m. instead of 5 p.m. Outdoor sites such as Lincoln's New Salem close at 4 p.m. during November through February because of darkness. Some other sites close at 4 p.m. because visitation drops off dramatically in late afternoon during the winter, and staff use the 4 to 5 p.m. hour to maintain the site's collections.

Most sites are currently open five days per week but will increase to seven days per week from the middle of spring through Labor Day 2006 as a result of a budget initiative by Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
