'The Elephant Man' opens at Lincoln College Oct. 27       Send a link to a friend

[OCT. 17, 2005]  Lincoln College Theatre Department will present "The Elephant Man" for the first performance of the season, opening on Oct. 27 in the Johnston Center for Performing Arts.

"The Elephant Man" is the story of Joseph Carey Merrick, a tragically deformed yet charming and intelligent Englishman. Merrick was born with the deformation and was abandoned at age 3. He was raised and made a living as a sideshow freak.

When his act becomes unprofitable he is abandoned to survive in the streets of London alone. In an effort to save him from the torments and mockery of the common man, Dr. Frederick Treves takes in Merrick and provides him a home. The story examines social views on disabilities and deformities and traces the journey that Merrick is afforded by Dr. Treves and the kindness of the famous actress Madge Kendal. The quest for normalcy leads the "elephant man" to heartbreak, anger, spiritual demise and death.

"The Elephant Man" was written by Bernard Pomerance and is directed by Lincoln College fine arts faculty member Chris Gray.
