HOPEWELL JUNCTION, N.Y. --
The first major storm of the season swept across Southern California
early last week, dropping walnut-sized hail and bursts of heavy
rain, triggering mudslides that shut down California's chief
north-south highway. Interstate 5 in the vicinity of the Tejon Pass
was closed for several hours after flooding rains left 4 feet of
standing water on the roadway surface.

At the peak, nearly 150,000 customers were without power. In the
Los Angeles area, mud and debris flowed off a burned mountainside in
Burbank, while hail fell in Arcadia and Hollywood Hills.
The storm forced the cancellation of a rooftop concert by the
group INXS. The band was to debut its new lead.
