Mount Pulaski Fall Festival begins
today

ribbon-cutting at historical museum

MOUNT PULASKI -- The executive director of the
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum will be the special
guest at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the
second floor of the Mount Pulaski Township Historical Museum at 4:30
p.m. Thursday (today). Dr. Richard Norton Smith, director of the
presidential library and museum in Springfield, will be attending on
behalf of Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The public is encouraged to attend
and to welcome this distinguished guest.

Events at the annual Mount Pulaski Fall Festival begin at 3 p.m.
Thursday and run through Saturday evening. The festival promises to
be bigger and better than ever before, with a tractor show; bigger
and better carnival rides that fill the downtown area; contests --
Lil', Junior and Miss Mount Pulaski, as well as Cutest Lil' Farmer;
great meals; and a car cruise-in on Saturday at 9 a.m. This year the
parade is being moved to 12:15 p.m. on Saturday to allow for more
festival fun all afternoon. Lana Hebenstreit, chair of Community
Pride -- the local organization that puts on the festival -- says
the event provides local churches and organizations with the
opportunity to raise money through sponsorships of the various meals
served during the festival. According to Hebenstreit, the festival
also is a popular time for local class reunions.
The Thursday afternoon ribbon-cutting at the museum on the square
in Mount Pulaski will dedicate the new second-floor addition,
featuring a parlor and club room remodeled in period furniture. Work
on this project has been under way for several years.
Mount Pulaski Mayor Bill Glaze is enthusiastic about the ceremony
and the guest appearance by Richard Norton Smith. "We are lucky and
fortunate to have him come to Mount Pulaski," Glaze said.

 Thursday also marks the grand opening of the Alpine Euro-Bakery
at 108 S. Washington in Mount Pulaski. The business is housed in a
historic downtown building that was formerly a meat market. Owners
Jill and Mike Saulsberry are providing a full-service retail bakery
featuring healthy, nutritious, "made from scratch" ingredients in
their bakery products, and specialty coffees as well. The bakery
will also have a substantial wholesale operation. Community leaders
are excited about the addition of this upscale business in this
small community of 1,800 people.
Mount Pulaski is the home of the Mount Pulaski Courthouse, which
is notable for the appearances there by Abraham Lincoln as an
attorney and occasionally as a substitute judge. The courthouse is
under the administration of the Illinois Historic Preservation
Agency.
