LDN correction of error in Tuesday edition  Send a link to a friend

[APRIL 19, 2006]  On the front page for Tuesday, April 18, we featured a picture taken of a woodpecker living in Edward Madigan State Park. We said it was a redheaded woodpecker.

Our friends in the Logan County Highway Department, who spend a good deal of their time outdoors, did some research. Engineering technician Milt Goodman consulted his copy of Audubon and believes this bird to actually be a red-bellied woodpecker.

This woodpecker's home was in direct line with the tornado that went through south of Lincoln about 1 a.m. Wednesday. Damage was reported next to his or her home at the Lincoln Correctional Center and to power lines along the rail line. We will send a reporter out to check on his home as soon feasible.

What do you think the pictured woodpecker is, male or female? [Red-bellied woodpecker]
