Ruth Spaits

[DEC. 4, 2006]  ATLANTA -- Ruth M. Spaits, 86, of Bloomington, formerly of Atlanta, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at 12:55 a.m. at BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal.

No visitation is scheduled. A private family graveside service will be at Minonk Cemetery, Minonk.

Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Spaits worked as an office nurse with her husband, Dr. Spaits, in his general practice of medicine in Atlanta from 1947 until 1977. The couple then moved to Sun City, Ariz., and continued their practice for three years in Mesa until their retirement in 1981. Early in her career, she worked as a visiting nurse in Peoria and as a practical nurse at Cook County Hospital.

She was born Dec. 12, 1919, in Streator to Charles Bert and Frances Ritenour Sauer. She married Dr. Wilfred M. Spaits on Jan.16, 1943, in Streator. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1997.

She is survived by her two sons, William R. (and Janice) Spaits of St. Louis, Mo., and Kim L. (and Cynthia) Spaits of Bloomington; six grandchildren, Kelsey, Lindsey and Lucas of Bloomington, Andrew of Parker, Colo., Jason of Greenville, Mo., and Bethany Depew of Amarillo, Texas; and six great-grandchildren, Joshua, Matthew, Meghan, Christopher, Kendra and Marissa.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Charles Bert Sauer Jr.

As one of the first students to complete a joint program offered by Bradley University and Methodist Hospital in Peoria, in 1942 she received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Bradley and an R.N. from Methodist Hospital.

Memorials may be made to the Atlanta United Methodist Church or the Atlanta Public Library.
