To the editor: This is to Mr[s]. Freese. [Letter]
What do you mean when you say, "He does not have to pay for police
or fire protection, nor other damage that occurs during the races"?
The only person that pays for that is the speedway owners. They
carry insurance that covers any damage, and from being at the
racetrack for the past two years, the only damage I have seen is
related to race cars, and that was always contained to the track
area.
As for police and fire protection, I have seen maybe three times
in two years that the fire department has responded to the track,
and one of those times was racing-related; the other two were
someone getting sick from the heat. As for police involvement, the
track has their own security that handles any problems and if [an
incident] becomes a problem, then they call the local police;
however, that has only happened once in two years. If you ask me, I
think that is an excellent track record.
If you are referring to the fact that paramedics are there, they
are there on a volunteer basis. If they are needed elsewhere in the
city or county, then they go. There is nothing holding them to the
track exclusively.

If you look at the fact, yes, the taxpayers pay the salaries for
the police and fire; however, you are paying those taxes even if
they don't respond to any incidents in a month -- you are still paying
taxes. As for the paramedics, generally they are paid by individuals
and insurance companies upon rendering of service.
I hope this clears things up, and seeing as I am not the owner(s)
or promoter at Lincoln Speedway, please do not take my comments as
someone speaking for the racetrack; instead take them as someone who
supports the track and as someone who is going off what knowledge I
do have regarding public service.
