Joseph Coffman

[NOV. 6, 2006]  Joseph Francis "Papaw" Coffman, 84, of Lincoln died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at 8 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be from 9:30 until 11 a.m. Thursday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln. A service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with Frank Bush officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will be in New Union Cemetery.

Mr. Coffman was a claims adjuster with State Farm Insurance Company and Laborers Local 895.

He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed in Europe.

He was born Dec. 16, 1921, in Jefferson County to Samuel and Catherine Bray Coffman. He married Theresa Ferne Boswell Stover in 1963 in Benton. She preceded him in death on Oct. 29, 1994.

He is survived by two stepdaughters, Peggy (and Donald) Stover Irvin of Mount Vernon and Rosita (and Marvin) Stover Jenkins of Lincoln; one brother, Shuford (and Evelyn) Coffman of Mount Vernon; three grandchildren, Julia Carr Goree of Mount Vernon, Michelle (and Chris) Jenkins Allison of Atlanta and Ryan (and Scott) Jenkins Bradford of Overland, Mo.; and six great-grandchildren, Celeste Jane Carr of Kansas City, Kan., Allison and Leah Goree of Mount Vernon, and Emily, Elizabeth "Libby" and Jesse Reiners of Atlanta.

He was also preceded in death by one sister and one grandson, Bruce Carr.

He attended Jefferson Street Christian Church.

He had moved from Mount Vernon to Logan County in 1973. He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mount Vernon.

He was a graduate of the University of Illinois and the University of Illinois Law School.

He was an avid reader, cat lover, gardener and history buff.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Logan County Humane Society.
