Jacob Lessen

[SEPT. 18, 2006]  Jacob "Jake" Eugene Lessen, 33, of Sherman, formerly of Lincoln, died Sept. 4, 2006, at 4:40 p.m. in a motorcycle accident on Old Jacksonville Road four miles west of Berlin.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at the Firefighters Lake Club, 940 West Lake Drive, Springfield.

There will be a service at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Firefighters Lake Club. Officiating will be the Rev. Mark Carnahan, Chaplain Jonathan Grubbs of Springfield Fire Department and the chaplain of the 183rd Fighter Wing.

Burial will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield.

Arrangements are by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Mr. Lessen was a firefighter for the city of Springfield, Engine 11, Station 11; a firefighter and technical sergeant with the 183rd Fighter Wing in Springfield; and a referee with the Capital Area Officials Association.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.

He was born Sept. 8, 1972, in Lincoln to Marvin E. and Andra Kay Spaits Lessen. He married Kristin "Kristi" Simpson on March 9, 2002, in Lincoln.

He is survived by his wife; of Sherman; his parents, of Lincoln; one sister, Teresa "Teri" (and Earle) Cagle off Edinburg; one brother, Jeffery (and Jackie) Lessen of Lincoln; two nieces, Jillian Cagle of Edinburg and Sheradan Foster of Rochester; and three nephews, Jeremy Cagle of Edinburg and Jonathan and Joseph Lessen of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; one brother, Timothy Joe; an aunt; and an uncle

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Sherman, Logan County Farm Bureau and a Harley owners group.

He graduated from Lincoln Community High School in 1990.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on July 18, 1990, and was a firefighter with the Air Force. On June 1, 1995, he became a firefighter with the 183rd fighter Wing at Capitol Airport in Springfield, where he was still an active member. On Aug. 1, 1997, he became a firefighter for the city of Lincoln. On May 5, 2003, he joined the firefighters for the city of Springfield Local 37 and International Association of Firefighters. He was an EMT paramedic for the Springfield and Lincoln fire departments and a volunteer with Lincoln Rural Fire Protection.

On Dec. 2, 1999, he became a basketball referee with the Capital Area Officials Association.

Memorials may be made to the Jake Lessen Memorial Firefighter Scholarship Fund.
