Youth livestock quiz          Send a link to a friend

[April 27, 2007]  URBANA -- Participants in the summer's 4-H and state fair livestock shows have a place to go to test their knowledge before entering a young producers' contest. "Livestock E-Quiz" includes questions at three levels --elementary, high school and college.

"It is designed to educate children about livestock but is particularly useful for 4-H and state fair exhibitors," explained Jane Scherer, University of Illinois Extension urban programs specialist and director of Web development. "It covers beef, dairy, horses, poultry, sheep and forages.

"The goal is to increase knowledge capacity and understanding, especially as we live in a society in which fewer and fewer young people are exposed to livestock every day."

Questions about each livestock group can be accessed at the user's particular level. Those who do well on the quiz have the opportunity to enter their initials in the site's "Hall of Fame."

The quizzes were developed by Dave Fischer, U of I Extension animal systems educator and Extension's animal systems team.
