Illinois Junior Amateur Golf Championship Send a link to a friend

[August 01, 2007] SAVOY -- Samantha Sloan of Lansing burned up the U of I golf course in Savoy on Tuesday, shooting a 5-under-par 71 to take medalist honors in the first round of the 28th Junior Girls' State Championship tournament. Hot on Sloan's heels, also with under-par rounds, were Lauren English of Bloomington with 73; Gianna DiGrazia of Addison with 74; and Jessica Parmenter of Peoria, Hailey Koschmann of Lake Forest and Kaitlyn Wampler of Bloomington, all with 75. Jaclyn Jansen of Effingham is close behind with a par 76.

Sloan who started on the back, birdied seven holes -- five on the front and two on the back. She conquered the 5,652-yard Orange Course with a 37 on the back and 34 on the front.

Other scorers in the 70s in the Illinois Women's Golf Association-sponsored tournament were Molly O'Connor of Wheaton, Ashley Armstrong of Flossmoor and Ember Schuldt of Sterling with 77; Hannah Buck of Naperville, Jackie Yu of Vernon Hills, Jamie Lavin of Deerfield and Kris Yoo of Schaumburg with 78; and Emily Calhoon of Effingham and Abbie Horan of Antioch with 79.

Five eagles and 142 birdies were recorded from the strong field of 94 players, who ranged in age from 7 to 18. Madasyn Pettersen, the 7-year old, scored 103 and is the youngest contestant in the history of the tournament. Hole 7 was the only one without a birdie, and the ninth hole was the easiest Tuesday -- 21 birdies and three eagles. Fifty-six percent of the field holds USGA handicap indexes of 10 or less.
