Lester 'Coogie' Durst

[August 02, 2007]  Lester Leo "Coogie" Durst, 83, of Indian Lake Estates, Fla., formerly of Lincoln and Homer, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at Lake Wales Hospital, Lake Wales, Fla.

His funeral will be Aug. 11 at 1:30 p.m. at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Carroll Richards officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 10 and one hour prior to the service on Aug. 11. A Masonic service will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 10.

Burial, with military rites, will be in New Union Cemetery.

Mr. Durst was a lineman and troubleshooter for Cilco for 35 1/2 years and a member of the IBEW union.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army 31st Calvary as a rifleman stationed in New Guinea.

He was born Jan. 21, 1924, in Latham to Jacob Ross and Mattie Mary Hamilton Durst. He married Julia Bock on Sept. 19, 1942, in Lincoln. She preceded him in death on Nov. 26, 2001.

He is survived by one daughter, Debra D. (and Thomas) Mullins of Milford, Del.; one grandson, Ryan Mullins; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and a good friend, Dorothy Springer.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Floyd, Kenneth and Paul; and one sister, Wilma Suedemeier.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales, Fla.; a member of several Elks clubs in Illinois and Florida; past commander of the Yacht Club of Indian Lakes Estate, Fla., where he also served on the board of trustees; a Shriner with the 25-man supercycle unit of the Eastern Illinois Masonic Lodge of Danville; a member of American Legion Post 290 in Homer, where he was commander, as well as past commander of Champaign County American Legion; a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars of Lake Wales, Fla.; Moose Lodge of Lake Wales, Fla.; Polywogs Fishing Club of Oakwood; and president of Young Democrats of Logan County.

During his military service, he earned two Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Campaign Service recognition and a Victory Medal.

Memorials may be made to Lake Wales Presbyterian Church, Lake Wales, Fla.
