18 Redbird Student-Athletes to Receive Degrees Saturday

[December 15, 2007]  NORMAL -- At the Illinois State University Winter Commencement on Saturday, 18 current and former Illinois State student-athletes, representing 10 different sports, will receive their undergraduate degrees. The ceremony to honor 1,107 baccalaureate, 174 master's and 54 doctoral degree recipients will be at Redbird Arena. Of the 18 student-athletes, five competed for the Redbirds in the fall of 2007.

Among those receiving degrees at Saturday's ceremony are men's basketball players Gregg Alexander, in recreation and park administration; Greg Dilligard, agriculture; and Roberto Fortes, university studies; baseball players Luke Baughman, elementary education; Matt Bolt, management; and Ryan Knox, psychology; football players Mike Blough, biological sciences; Brandon Joyce, university studies; Jesse Caesar, university studies; Rafael Rice, history; Garry Roberts, family and consumer science; and Cameron Siskowic, exercise science; men's tennis player Tim Link, business administration; women's soccer player Amanda Lauber, sociology; volleyball player Manoela Dacunha, international business; softball player Shannon Nicholson, business teacher education; men's track middle distance runner Jeremy Doherty, economics; women's track sprinter Lyn Cox, international business; and women's swimmer Jamie Haseman, elementary education.

Alexander is 37th on the Redbirds' all-time scoring list with 1,023 points in his career. He also is the school's all-time leader in 3-point field goals (224) and is sixth in 3-point field goal percentage (.411). Dilligard is Illinois State's all-time leader in blocked shots (143) and has three of the top 10 single-season block totals.

Baughman was an honorable mention selection to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team in 2007 and was a nominee for the Doug Collins Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award this fall. Bolt received an honorable mention all-Valley honor in 2006 after leading the Redbirds in runs scored (43), walks (32) and on-base percentage (.409).

Caesar, Joyce, Rice and Roberts all played for the Redbirds in 2007. Caesar was a First-Team All-Gateway selection as the Redbirds fourth-leading tackler (81), and Rice, the team's top rusher with 966 yards, was named to the second team. Joyce was an All-Gateway Newcomer team member in 2006, and Siskowic was the Gateway Conference Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus all-American in 2006.

Lauber finished her career at Illinois State this fall with 10 points on two goals and six assists. She played in 68 games in her career and helped the Redbirds to the 2007 Valley regular-season title.

Nicholson was a Second-Team Easton All-American in 2007 and was named the Female Athlete of the Year and the Linda Herman Female Student-Athlete of the Year at Illinois State in the fall.

Haseman recorded top-five times for the Redbirds in all freestyle events in 2006-07 and received the Most Improved and Rebecca Wade (given to the swimmer who exhibits the all-around characteristics of a student-athlete) awards.
