Wal-Mart was sharp at the plate. Austin Jones had three hits and
scored three runs. Andy Krusz and Tanner Smith had two hits, Krusz
knocking in two runs and Smith with three RBIs. Others with hits for
Wal-Mart were Jake Olson, Corey Janssen, Jason Buckles and Seth
Graue.
Despite outhitting Illini Central, Wal-Mart did themselves in
with errors and walks. Smith (3-1) suffered his first loss, allowing
seven walks while striking out five in only two-plus innings of
work, spotting Illini Central 11 runs. Jones and Krusz would combine
in relief work for four-plus innings, allowing only four runs the
rest of the way. In the end, the lead was too much for Wal-Mart to
overturn.
The tournament for 13-14-year-olds begins Monday, with games at
5:45 and 8 p.m. Joining three Lincoln teams are teams from
Hartsburg-Emden, Mason City and Mount Pulaski. Games will continue
on Tuesday and Friday at the same times. The championship game is
scheduled for July 13.
