Carmona, Indians Hold Off Rangers 3-2    Send a link to a friend

[July 21, 2007]  (AP) Fausto Carmona dominated the Texas Rangers for eight innings. He really got to sweat watching the ninth. The Cleveland Indians right-hander allowed three hits and didn't give up a run Friday night before he was lifted after 105 pitches with a 3-0 lead. Closer Joe Borowski gave up two runs and two hits and overcame two errors by his teammates before striking out Brad Wilkerson with the bases loaded to earn a shaky save in the Indians' 3-2 victory.

"None of my saves are uninteresting, so I'm used to it," Borowski said after getting his 28th save in 31 opportunities. "I pretty much go right after you. If you beat me, you beat me."

The Rangers didn't come close to beating Carmona (12-4), who struck out seven and got 14 groundball outs to win his fourth straight start.

"It was my best stuff," Carmona said. "I was getting ahead of hitters. All three pitches were working. I threw the changeup more for strikeouts, but I threw sinkers and sliders, too."

Travis Hafner homered and Victor Martinez had three doubles to help the Indians pull within one game of the AL Central-leading Detroit.

In other AL games, it was: Kansas City 10, Detroit 2; Boston 10, Chicago 3; Tampa Bay 14, New York 4; Seattle 4, Toronto 2; Minnesota 7, Los Angeles 5; and Baltimore 6, Oakland 1.

Cleveland's adventurous ninth started when Desi Relaford reached on first baseman Ryan Garko's fielding error with one out. Relaford went to second on Adam Melhuse's pinch-hit single and scored on Mark Teixeira's single to break up the shutout.

After a forceout, Teixeira scored when Gerald Laird's routine grounder bounced out of shortstop Mike Rouse's glove to make it 3-2. Borowski struck out Wilkerson swinging at a slider.

"He got like six outs," Garko said. "He's picked us up all year. It was a great individual effort."

The Indians turned three double plays in support of Carmona, who hasn't lost since June 27.

"It was one of the strangest innings and we still finished on the upside," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "The funny thing is we played our tails off in the infield the whole game, but then things started happening."

And they almost happened Texas' way.

"They made some mistakes and we were one swing away from pulling it off," Rangers manager Ron Washington said.

Ramon Vazquez had the only extra-base hit for the Rangers, a third-inning double.

Martinez doubled leading off the sixth against Brandon McCarthy (4-7) and Hafner followed with his 16th homer to make it 3-0.

McCarthy allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2-3 innings. The Indians have scored two runs for McCarthy in his last six starts.

"It isn't easy, but I've just got to put up zeros," McCarthy said. "Carmona didn't have any run support either, but he put up zeros. I've got to do a better job of shutting them down entirely."

Royals 10, Tigers 2

Billy Butler had four hits and four RBIs for Kansas City and Gil Meche improved to 4-0 in his last seven starts. Mark Grudzielanek also had four hits for the visiting Royals, who are 23-18 since June 1 after posting 22 straight losing months.

Meche (7-6) gave up two runs and five hits in seven innings.

Kenny Rogers (3-2) had his second straight poor start after returning from an injury with three straight wins. He allowed six runs _ five earned _ and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings.

Red Sox 10, White Sox 3

Josh Beckett (13-3) had a season-high 10 strikeouts and tied for the major league lead with his 13th win as Boston snapped a three-game losing streak.

Coco Crisp's three-run triple in the fifth gave Boston a 4-3 lead and a Julio Lugo hit a grand slam in the eighth, driving in the last of the 10 runs allowed by starter Jose Contreras (5-12).

Visiting Chicago took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third on Jim Thome's three-run homer.

Devil Rays 14, Yankees 4

Edwin Jackson (2-9) allowed four singles and four walks over six shutout innings to win on the road for the first time since 2003.

B.J. Upton went 3-for-6 with three RBIs in his first career multihomer game and Dioner Navarro hit his first career grand slam for the Devil Rays, who beat Mike Mussina (4-7) for the first time in eight starts at Yankee Stadium.

Mariners 4, Blue Jays 2

At Toronto, Adrian Beltre hit a two-run homer and Miguel Batista (10-7) won for the third time in four starts, allowing two runs and five hits over 5 2-3 innings.

J.J. Putz pitched the ninth for his 29th save, extending his streak of scoreless innings to 22.

Rookie right-hander Jesse Litsch (2-4) allowed four runs, five hits and four walks in 4 1-3 innings.

Twins 7, Angels 5

Justin Morneau homered and drove in three runs as Minnesota's struggling offense finally got going. After scoring only five runs during a three-game sweep by Detroit this week, the Twins got three in the first inning and four in the third against John Lackey.

Lackey (12-6) lost for the first time in nearly a month and allowed 10 hits, seven runs _ five earned _ in five innings for the visiting Angels.

Orioles 6, Athletics 1

Erik Bedard (9-4) allowed one hit in seven innings and struck out 11 to increase his major league-leading total to 167 and win his fifth straight decision. He carried a no-hit bid into the sixth before Mark Ellis homered with two outs, ending Bedard's scoreless streak at 21 innings.

Paul Shuey and Chris Ray completed the three-hitter for the visiting Orioles.

Joe Blanton (8-7) lasted 5 2-3 innings, allowing six runs and 10 hits.
