Sparks fly at county board meeting

[March 21, 2007]  Tuesday night's county board meeting had several testy exchanges between board chairman Dick Logan and board member Bill Sahs.

Sahs was more than concerned that board members were left out of the loop in recommending the appointment of William D'Andrea to the post of part-time zoning officer for Logan County.

Sahs questioned why this wasn't brought forth through the executive committee and interviews were not conducted. Sahs also questioned why the chairman was secretly doing this, after he pledged openness and participation when taking the chairman's post in December.

Several other board members, including Terry Werth and Vicky Hasprey, questioned the timeliness and rush to fill this slot, especially since a hiring freeze was passed until the audit for 2005 is complete.

D'Andrea will pick up some of the code enforcement and planning duties left open by the recent resignation of Logan County coordinator Dewey Colter.

In the end, the appointment was approved on an 11-1 vote, with Sahs dissenting.

In other action, the board gave approval for the appointments of Mike Patridge and Stan Anderson to the Emergency System Telephone Board and Dr. Richard Biven to the Logan County Board of Health.

Also approved is a new "no smoking" ordinance for all county facilities and properties.

The proposed truancy ordinance was tabled for further language changes.

It was also reported that a new animal control proposal was forwarded to the city of Lincoln with a one-year term in the amount of $35,000. This amount is down from the original quote of $44,000.

Finance chairman Chuck Ruben announced a special finance committee meeting for March 27 at 7 p.m. to review the draft of the 2005 audit.
