NORMAL -- The oldest football
rivalry in the state of Illinois and the 13th-longest in the
Football Championship Subdivision will continue through 2012, thanks
to a recently signed contract between Illinois State and Eastern
Illinois.

The new deal, which begins in 2009, adds four more games to the
series, including the 100th meeting between the two schools. To
date, ISU and Eastern Illinois have met 96 times, with the first
game taking place in 1901. The Redbirds lead the series 50-37-9 and
have won the last six meetings.
Head coach Denver Johnson enjoys the annual in-state contest
against Eastern Illinois.
"This is a game that I think each institution really cherishes on
their schedule," said Johnson. "It is one of the longest-running
rivalries in all of college football, and over the years has
provided good, entertaining and competitive football games. We are
excited to continue the series."
In 2009, the Redbirds will travel to Charleston to face EIU on
Sept. 3. The following season, the Panthers will play a return game
at Hancock Stadium on Sept. 18, 2010. The 100th meeting appears to
be scheduled for Sept. 17, 2011, at O'Brien Stadium, barring another
postseason matchup. The contract concludes with the Sept. 15, 2012,
game in Normal.
