Sen. Brady Thinks Voters Should Have Recall Option

Send a link to a friend

Dear Editor:

In 1948, former Illinois Gov. Adlai Stevenson noted that "government is more than the sum of all interests; it is the paramount interest, the public interest. It must be the efficient, effective agent of a responsible citizenry, not the shelter of the incompetent and the corrupt."

When a state official fails to provide effective leadership to accomplish the constitutional goals of government, our citizens should have a means available to them to move toward more trusted and effective leadership.

I am co-sponsoring Senate Joint Resolution Constitutional Amendment 70, which calls for adding to the Illinois Constitution a process for voters to recall public officials. Three-fifths of lawmakers must approve this measure to present it to voters in the next election. Once on the ballot, a proposed amendment becomes effective if approved by either three-fifths of those voting on the question or a majority of those voting in the election.

[to top of second column in this letter]

Amendments to our state constitution should not be lightly considered. They should be sought to address long-term, systemic issues within state government.

Eighteen other states allow for the recall of state officials. It should be an option available to the voters of Illinois.

Sincerely,

Bill Brady
State senator, 44th District
