[October 23, 2007]  (AP) Santa Ana winds were expected to continue fanning wildfires in California, while a cold front was forecast to push through the Ohio Valley, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Showers were anticipated to taper off late Tuesday in the Northeast as the front pushes offshore. Cooler air was to filter in after the cold front, causing temperatures to fall through Thursday.

A cold front moving through the Southeast was forecast to bring showers and thunderstorms from the Mississippi Valley to the Mid-Atlantic and Southwest. Damaging winds gusts or a tornado were possible. Rain was also forecast for the Great Lakes.

In the West, another beautiful autumn day was forecast west of the Plains, though hot, dry Santa Ana winds were expected to fuel Southern California wildfires enhanced by dry conditions. Temperatures in the Southwest and California were expected to rise into the 70s and 80s, while the Northwest was forecast to reach the 60s.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of 3 degrees at Monarch Pass, Colo., to a high of 95 degrees at Plant City, Fla.
