Dear Editor:

On Sept. 19 I received Rev. Parmenter's critique of my essay titled "Did Abraham Lincoln Practice Law in the Christian Church of Lincoln, Illinois?" I was pleased to see that Rev. Parmenter found my suggestions for further research to be helpful and that he intends to pursue them.

On the other hand, he did find serious fault with a couple of passages in my essay. Accordingly, I have attempted a rebuttal of this criticism.

Rev. Parmenter e-mailed his critique to various central Illinois newspapers, intending to reach a wide public audience, and I think he was right to do so. Thus, I have published his critique and my rebuttal below my essay about Lincoln and the Christian Church. Many of your readers may be interested in this exchange, so I ask you to provide the link to it:

Your help with this request would be much appreciated.
