Francis Twiss Jr.

[December 02, 2008]  Burial for Francis J. Twiss, 89, of Lincoln, will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., on Dec. 15 at 8:45 a.m.

Mr. Twiss died Nov. 22, 2008, at 12:24 a.m. at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

His funeral was at Holy Family Catholic Church on Nov. 25 at 11:45 a.m. The Rev. Jeffrey G. Laible officiated. Visitation was at Peasley Funeral Home from 10 until 11:30 a.m., following recital of the rosary at 9:45 a.m.

Military rites were conducted by American Legion Post 263.

Mr. Twiss retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of quartermaster chief after 20 years of service. Most of his time was spent on the submarine USS Flasher. After retirement he worked for the Defense Supply Agency, Defense Logistics Agency and General Service Administration.

Francis John Twiss Jr. was born Jan. 5, 1919, in Watertown, N.Y., to Francis John Sr. and Sybel Twiss. He married Ethel Mae Holstrom in 1961. She preceded him in death on Feb. 28, 1987. He married Lillian Rakewich-Hoerdemann on Sept. 16, 1989. She survives.

He is also survived by his stepchildren, Sue, Barbara and Dan, Michelle, Hans, Eric, Paul and Carolyn; several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and three sisters.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Funeral Director

He was a member of Holy Family Church, where he was a eucharistic minister for 20 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Lincoln Elks Lodge 914.

He received the Bronze Star, Navy Commendation medal and the Presidential Unit Citation medal for his military service.

Memorials may be made to the Holy Family Parish Food Pantry.
