Esther Lane

[January 14, 2008]  McLEAN -- Esther Marie Lane, 99, of McLean died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008, at 3:55 a.m. at The Christian Village in Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church of McLean. Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Andy Maxwell and the Rev. Ryan Edgecombe officiating.

Burial will be in McLean Cemetery.

Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lane was a teacher for 24 years at Waynesville and McLean, where she taught third and fifth grade. She previously taught in one-room country schools.

She was born Feb. 10, 1908, at Covell to Julius and Anna Stappenbeck Alwes. She married Alfred V. Lane on Dec. 25, 1935, in Mackinaw. He preceded her in death on June 18, 1990.

She is survived by her children, Marcia (and Ted) Long of McLean, Richard (and Jan) Lane of Lincoln and Christine (and Dale) Colaw of Atlanta; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one step-great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, one sister and one grandson.

She graduated from Stanford High School in 1927 and attended Illinois State Normal University.

After retiring she volunteered at the grade school and preschool and visited shut-ins and new residents in McLean. In 1982 she received a plaque from the Kentucky Fried Chicken Foundation for Outstanding Volunteer in McLean County.
