[September 03, 2008]  The Lincoln City Council approved Mayor Beth Davis-Kavelman's recommendation of Dean Henrichsmeyer to fill the vacant Ward 1 alderman seat.

CivicAs the first order of the evening, Henrichsmeyer accepted the invitation, was sworn in and seated, and cast his first votes on matters of business.

At 30 years of age, Henrichsmeyer is the youngest council member. He's been in Lincoln 25 years and spent his first five years in Mount Pulaski. He is an engineering manager for SourceForge, a company out of California, and has his office with Integrity Data in Lincoln. His wife, Krista, was present for his swearing in. They have two children, a daughter, 5, and a son, 2.

Henrichsmeyer's father is also named Dean.

Henrichsmeyer has no prior government office experience. He said that he contacted the mayor when she asked for people with an interest. His motivation for taking office: "I enjoy living in Lincoln, and with a young family, I want it to be the best it can be." He said that in the immediate future he would just look to settle in, learn the position and what is happening here.

Aldermen serve on five committees. The mayor has appointed Henrichsmeyer to chair the sanitation committee, which includes animal control, and vice chair the buildings and grounds committee. The other three committees would be announced next week, she said.

The mayor announced that Melody Anderson would move from sanitation to chair the finance, policies and procedures committee.

Henrichsmeyer fills the seat vacated by longtime council member Benny Huskins, who retired in July.

The city of Lincoln has five wards with two aldermen per ward. Aldermen's terms are for four years. To provide continuity, the two positions in each ward are staggered to expire on alternating two years. The term Henrichsmeyer accepted expires April 30, 2009. Anderson serves as the other Ward 1 alderman, and her term would expire April 30, 2011.
