[August 26, 2009]  The death of a 2-year-old Lincoln boy, Lucas Tyler Alberts, is under investigation, according to Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll.

Alberts originally had been brought to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital at about 6 a.m. Sunday by the boy's mother, Jody Alberts. An emergency medical copter then flew the child to Children's Hospital of Illinois in Peoria, where he was admitted at 8:15 a.m. The toddler was pronounced dead at 2:28 p.m.

Because the child died in Peoria, the Peoria coroner conducted the autopsy. Results of an autopsy by Ingersoll indicated that Alberts died of trauma to the head.

The toddler's body has been released to the family and funeral arrangements have been made. (Obituary)

Lincoln Police Department Deputy Police Chief Mike Geriets said that Chief Stuart Erlenbush was preparing a statement for this afternoon and that there would be no comment out of the department until that time. Geriets did say that as of 9 this morning, no one had been charged with any crime.

Lincoln Police Department officials have scheduled a press conference for 1:30 this afternoon in the Blue Room at the Logan County Safety Complex.
