[December 04, 2009]  OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- The Athletics have acquired second baseman Aaron Miles, third baseman Jake Fox and cash considerations from the Chicago Cubs for three players.

The Cubs receive right-handed pitcher Jeff Gray, minor league outfielder Matt Spencer and minor league right-hander Ronny Morla in the swap announced Thursday.

This deal gives Oakland added depth in an infield that has been plagued by injury. While general manager Billy Beane and the A's remain hopeful that six-time Gold Glove third baseman Eric Chavez will return to spring training healthy following season-ending back surgery, Beane knew he needed a contingency plan.

Chavez could now spend a good chunk of his time as designated hitter for the A's, signed free-agent third baseman Dallas McPherson to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
