New York responded by covering 74 yards in four plays, with top draft pick Hakeem Nicks scoring on a 21-yard pass from Manning. Terrence Newman gambled for an interception, but missed, and Nicks sprinted down the right sideline for the score.
Three plays later, the Giants were threatening again. Mathias Kiwanuka forced Marion Barber's fumble that defensive end Osi Umenyiora -- who lost his starting job this week -- returned 24 yards, palming the ball in his right hand as he scooted down the left sideline.
Two passes to Steve Smith netted 27 yards, and Jacobs surged in from the 1 with 19 seconds left. Even though the Cowboys had possession for 21 minutes of the half, they trailed by four points at the break.
It didn't get any better for Dallas.
