He also said freshman linebacker Manti Te'o is expected to decide soon whether he will be back at school next fall or whether he will take time off for a Mormon mission.
Kelly said there's nothing he can do about having just one quarterback, Dayne Crist, left on the roster.
High school senior Tommy Rees is expected to enroll in the school next week and another high school senior QB who committed to Weis is considering his options. The Irish also could move receiver John Goodman, who played quarterback in high school.
The Irish might not have gotten Kelly as their new coach if Texas quarterback Colt McCoy had held the ball a second longer against Nebraska in the Big 12 title game.
If the Longhorns hadn't had one last second left to kick the winning field goal, Cincinnati probably would have been playing for the national championship instead. Kelly said if that were the case, he would not have left the Bearcats before the national title game and doesn't know if Notre Dame would have waited for him.
"Every job that I've taken is because I want to play for a championship. When you have the opportunity to play for a national championship, I'm going to be on that sideline," he said.
Notre Dame is hoping for just that.
