[February 28, 2009]  CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Charlotte's PGA Tour event will no longer be called the Wachovia Championship. The change stems from the backlash against struggling financial companies spending money on marketing.

InsuranceAn official with knowledge of the decision said Friday that Wells Fargo will continue to sponsor the tournament after its recent purchase of Wachovia. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because an announcement hadn't been made.

A new name for the tournament - one of the most successful on the tour - was expected to be announced later in the day.

SportsBusiness Daily first reported that Wells Fargo had decided to drop the Wachovia name.
