(Editorial:
We need to restore the old soldier monument) To the editor:
Honestly, I had never noticed the statue, although I have lived
here 18 years. However, I am sorry to learn that this landmark of
such historical importance has been destroyed.
One wonders whether the sentiment or will exists to see that it
is restored, particularly in this floundering economy. Important as
it is to our history, it seems unlikely such a project will be high
on our list of priorities at this time.
I recall the difficulty the Lincoln Woman's Club had raising the
money to restore the statue on the south side of the square, and
that project was, undoubtedly, far less costly that the restoration
of the "old soldier" would be, given the extent of the damage.
(Thankfully one woman in particular persisted -- Mrs. Bernie DePuy
-- and eventually it was done.)
