[January 14, 2009]  MOUNT PULASKI -- A fatal vehicle crash occurred on Illinois Route 121 in Mount Pulaski today at approximately 8:07 a.m.

Mount Pulaski Fire and EMS, Illinois Department of Transportation, Logan County Paramedics, and the  Logan County coroner were called in to assist.

The driver of a blue 2008 Honda car, Rachel E. Higgins, 26, of Mount Zion, was killed in the incident.

Higgins was driving northbound on Route 121, approximately 958 feet west of Route 54 in Mount Pulaski when, due to inclement weather and road conditions, she lost control of her vehicle. Higgins crossed the center line and entered the southbound lane of Route 121, directly into the path of a white 2007 Mack truck tractor with 1999 Vanette trailer driven southbound by McKindle Beler. The Honda came to rest in the southbound ditch, and Beler was able to guide his vehicle to the right shoulder.

Beler sustained no injuries. Higgins was pronounced dead at the scene.
