[July 16, 2009]  TURNBERRY, Scotland (AP) -- Twenty years after winning his lone major title just up the road, Mark Calcavecchia (Cal-cuh-VECK-e-ah) shot a 3-under 67 to claim the clubhouse lead at the British Open.

Taking advantage of benign weather on the picturesque Scottish coast, Calcavecchia went out in the first group Thursday with his wife on the bag, sped around the course in a little more than 4 hours and stayed away from bogey over the last 15 holes of his round.

Calcavecchia won the 1989 Open at Troon, about 20 miles north of Turnberry.

Also at 3 under: 59-year-old Tom Watson, who won the 1977 Open when it first came to Turnberry, and England's Lee Westwood, who opened with three straight birdies. Westwood was playing with Tiger Woods, who was even through six holes.
