Verlander (11-5) struggled with his control early, walking four batters in the first five innings. But he didn't allow a hit after the fourth until the White Sox, coming off Mark Buehrle's perfect game Thursday, started the ninth with three singles. Verlander struck out four.
Jose Contreras (4-9) took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits in 6 2-3 innings.
Chicago left the bases loaded in the second and stranded two more runners in the third.
