[June 12, 2009]  CHICAGO (AP) -- The number of home foreclosure filings in Illinois fell in May, though it was still higher than a year ago.

A report released Thursday by Irvine, Calif.-based RealtyTrac shows 10,942 foreclosure filings in Illinois last month. Filings include default notices, auction-sale notices and bank repossessions.

The Illinois filings dropped 20 percent from April's level but were almost 10 percent higher than May of last year.

One in every 479 housing units in the state received a foreclosure filing in May. That's below the national average but high enough to rank Illinois 11th nationally.
