Edward Higgins

[June 24, 2009]  Edward W. Higgins, 93, of Lincoln, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at 12:32 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jeffrey G. Laible and the Rev. John Huy Pham officiating. Prior to that, there will be a rosary service at 8:45 a.m. and visitation from 9 until 10 at the church.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Peasley Funeral Home in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.

A lifelong farmer, Mr. Higgins also worked as a statistician in Washington, D.C., managed the ASCS office in Lincoln, and was a plumber and steamfitter.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in Guam in the Pacific.

Ed was born on March 27, 1916, in Lincoln to William J. and Louise McGough Higgins. He married Virginia "Gini" Webster in Lincoln on April 6, 1953.

He is survived by his wife; one son, Michael Higgins (and fiancée Caroline Edwards) of Lincoln; one sister, Dorothy Reinhart of Lincoln; and his extended family of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Edwin Higgins, and two sisters, Mary Buss and Ursula Harder.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1250 and 4th Degree Assembly 226, where he served as grand knight, and a member of Lincoln Elks Lodge 914.

He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1934.

Memorials may be made to Holy Family Food Pantry, Carroll Catholic School, Knights of Columbus Newman Fund, Elks Crippled Children's Fund or Operation Phone Card to "Help Our Troops Call Home."
