[March 28, 2009]  CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- The Philadelphia Phillies acquired reliever Jack Taschner from the San Francisco Giants on Friday for catcher Ronny Paulino.

RestaurantTaschner was 3-2 with a 4.88 ERA in 67 games last season. He gives the Phillies another left-hander in the bullpen to go with Scott Eyre. J.C. Romero was suspended the first 50 games for using a banned substance.

Paulino came to the Phillies in a trade that sent minor league catcher Jason Jaramillo to Pittsburgh last December. He hit .212 with two home runs and 18 RBIs in 40 games for the Pirates. Paulino also threw out 26 percent (8-of-31) of base stealers.

The 30-year-old Taschner is 8-4 with a 5.01 ERA in 178 career games, all as a reliever. He allowed 57 hits, struck out 29 and walked 24 in 48 innings last year. Left-handed hitters batted .279 against him (29-for-104) while right-handers hit .308 (28-for-91). Taschner was 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in 16 appearances against the NL East.

Paulino was competing with Chris Coste for the backup catcher position behind starter Carlos Ruiz. He was hitting .194 with one homer in 13 Grapefruit League games. Paulino likely wasn't going to make the 25-man roster.
