New Holland-Middletown Education Association working without a contract

RestaurantTo the editor:

New Holland-Middletown teachers are working without a contract this year. Negotiations have been ongoing since the start of the school year, but the association has been unable to reach an agreement with the board of education.

New Holland-Middletown Education Association President Diane Bicknell states the following:

"Our goal is to maintain the integrity of the school district. In order to serve the students and provide them with a quality education, the district must be able to attract and retain high-quality teachers.

"District test scores are excellent due to the quality teachers and parents we have in the district. Our goal is to maintain that quality.

"We are not interested in securing a contract that treats New Holland-Middletown students as if they are the training ground for new teachers who soon move on to school districts that offer better salaries and benefits.

[to top of second column in this letter]

"New Holland-Middletown must stop the trend of losing teachers to other school districts that pay better and offer better benefits. It hurts students, teachers and property values.

"We currently are dead-last in salaries when compared with competitor school districts. It's not fair to us or to the community and students.

"The district can afford our proposal in its entirety with no new taxes. Even if they said yes to our offer, we'd still remain dead-last in salaries and benefits."

Diane Bicknell
New Holland-Middletown Education Association president
