Richard 'Dick' Downing

[August 31, 2009]  SPRINGFIELD -- Richard "Dick" T. Downing, 86, of Springfield, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, at 11:30 p.m. at St. John's Hospital.

His graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Pulaski Cemetery, Mount Pulaski, with Larry Hanson officiating. Military rites will be conducted.

Visitation will be at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Downing was a salesman for SMW Auto Supply in Springfield for 50 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Mount Pulaski to Floyd Eugene and Lela J. Irving Downing. He married Maxine Foster in Illiopolis on Sept. 6, 1944. She preceded him in death on Aug. 30, 1983.

He is survived by one son, Tom (and Robin) Downing of Dawson; one daughter, Susan Downing of Springfield; and one granddaughter, Hilary Downing of Dawson.

He was a member of American Legion Post 447.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
