[December 02, 2010]  BEND, Ore. -- Ann Gossett Palmer, 79, a longtime Bend resident, died Nov. 24, 2010, with her family by her side, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. She lived in Illinois in her early years.

No services are currently scheduled. A celebration of her life will be planned.

Baird Funeral Home of Bend is in charge of arrangements.

Ann was born Feb. 25, 1931, in Chicago, Ill. Her parents were Leo Everett and Ruth Elizabeth Friend Gossett. She married H. James Palmer.

She is survived by her husband, Jim, of 55 years; two daughters, Lynn Palmer Wittekind (and husband Dave) of River Forest, Ill., and Lisa Palmer Farrugia (and husband John) of Libertyville, Ill.; and four grandchildren, Karen Palmer Wittekind, Van Palmer Wittekind, James Joseph Farrugia and Anna Lynn Farrugia.

Devoted dog lovers, Ann and Jim actively supported the Humane Society of Central Oregon's work in building the Bend animal shelter, which opened in 2004.

Ann was a member of the Friend Family Association, a historic family group with ancestral ties to the founding colonies. As a Mayflower descendant, she also was a longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She graduated from Los Angeles (Calif.) High School in 1949.

She and her husband made several relocations to various cities within California, New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois. An avid downhill skier for most of her life, she and her husband retired to Bend, Ore., in 1991.

A nine-year pancreatic cancer survivor, Ann was diagnosed in 2008 with an unrelated, rare form of lung cancer. Despite the challenges of these illnesses, she pursued her passions for cooking, devoting time to family and friends and traveled to locations throughout Asia, Canada, Europe and Latin America.

"She never let her illness define who she was, or place limits on how she approached her life. Her optimism, courage and tenacity these past years have been inspirational to many," her daughter Lisa said.

The Palmer family welcomes memorial donations made in Ann's name to Partners in Care, 2075 NE Wyatt Court, Bend, OR 97701.
