[July 13, 2010] 

Accidents

June 20

Accident occurred on Rochelle Avenue 321 feet east of Richland Avenue at 5:16 p.m.

  • White, Phyllis J., 68-year-old female, of Lincoln; 2009 Cadillac

  • Bird, Dennis M., 59-year-old male, of Lincoln; 2001 Chevrolet Impala

Bird was parked facing west in the cul-de-sac. White was backing out of a private driveway and backed into the Bird vehicle.

June 22

Accident occurred on Home Avenue 169 feet south of Wyatt Avenue.

  • Beard, Courtney K., 30-year-old female, of Lincoln; 1984 Chevrolet conventional cab pickup owned by Rodney Dove

The report stated that the vehicle was located in the driveway of Beard residence after the fact.

Beard told police that she believed the accident occurred on June 22 at 10 p.m.

She first said that she struck a utility pole, but there was no damage sustained in the accident. She then said that she believed she had hit some garbage cans, but again there was no damage sustained. Finally she told the officer that she had been run off the road by an unidentified vehicle.

The police report noted that when the vehicle was located, remnants of the utility pole she had struck were on the vehicle.

Beard was ticketed for failure to give information after striking personal property.

June 23

Accident occurred in the 2900 block of Woodlawn 1532 feet south of Heitmann Drive at 5:21 p.m.

  • Pettersen, Brandt, 46-year-old male, of Springfield; Hyundai Santa Fe

Pettersen reported he was parked in the lot of the Thorntons on the city's west side. When he came out of the building, he found that his vehicle had been struck by an unknown vehicle.

The police report noted that the damage to the vehicle was on the top of the hood and going down to the passenger-side bumper. It was stated that with semi traffic being heavy at that station, it may have been a semi that struck the Pettersen vehicle.

June 25

Accident occurred on South McLean 24 feet south of Broadway at noon.

  • Novak, Francis P., 75-year-old male, of Lincoln; 1999 Chevrolet small conventional cab pickup

  • Sutton, Joanie L., 39-year-old female, of Lincoln; 2003 Ford Ranger owned by Jerry Gaddy

The vehicle driven by Sutton was at the intersection of McLean and Broadway, stopped for the traffic signal. Novak was parked in front of the post office. Novak said that when he started to back out, he did not see the Sutton vehicle and backed into it.

Novak was ticketed for improper packing.

June 25

Accident occurred on the Interstate 55 business loop 450 feet east of North Jefferson at 10:53 p.m.

  • Zinser, Thomas J., 18-year-old male of Emden; 1998 Chevrolet small conventional cab pickup

Zinser said that he was approaching North Jefferson Street from the east when a deer ran out in front of him. He struck the deer.

June 28

Accident occurred at Memorial Park Road at 3:23 p.m.

  • Licensed driver under the age of 18

  • Arneaud, Marcia R., 46-year-old female of Lincoln; 2004 Dodge Durango

Arneaud was on Fifth Street, attempting to turn onto Memorial Park Road. The other driver was stopped at the sign on Memorial Park Road, waiting to turn onto Fifth Street.

Driver 1 was distracted and unintentionally accelerated, moving the vehicle forward and hitting the Arneaud vehicle.

Driver 1 was ticketed.

June 29

Accident occurred at the intersection of Fifth and Adams at 10 a.m.

  • Albert, Casey J., 24-year-old male, of Lincoln; 1998 Ford Econoline owned by Albert Brothers

  • Zurkamer, Wanda L., 79-year-old female, of Lincoln; 2008 Dodge Cavalier

Witnesses giving accounts of the accident: Witness 1 was northbound on Adams and stopped at the intersection with Fifth Street. Witness 2 was southbound on Adams, also stopped at the intersection.

It was observed that Zurkamer was eastbound on Fifth and was stopped, waiting to turn off Fifth Street onto Adams, when Albert, unable to stop his vehicle, struck hers.

Albert said that he saw Zurkamer was stopped and that she had her turn signal on, but he was unable to stop in time.

Witness accounts said it appeared that Albert was driving above the speed limit. Witnesses also said they saw Albert's brake lights engage and that he skidded before hitting the car.

Zurkamer was taken to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital by the Logan County Paramedic Association, while Albert was transported to ALMH by a private vehicle.

Albert was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

June 30

Accident occurred on South Postville Drive 25 feet north of Seventh Street at 3:26 p.m.

  • Fisher, Heather R., 21-year-old female, of Lincoln; 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue

Fisher said that she was northbound on Postville Drive when a tan SUV traveling southbound failed to yield the right of way as Fisher was attempting to turn. She said that she swerved to avoid an accident and lost control of her vehicle. She ran off the road and into a ditch, causing damage to her vehicle.

July 6

Accident occurred at 4:25 p.m. in the 1000 block of Heitmann Drive.

  • Schleder, Beau R., 20-year-old male, of Lincoln; 2002 Pontiac Aztek SRV 4x2

  • Licensed driver under the age of 18

Vehicle 2 was traveling through the parking lot while Schleder was backing out of a parking space. Schleder said that he did not see the other vehicle and backed into a trailer it was towing.

July 6

Accident occurred at 9:50 a.m. at the intersection of Keokuk and Kickapoo.

  • Jackson, Emily A., 24-year-old female of Lincoln; 2003 GM Envoy belonging to Jeremy D. Duffer

  • Holmes, Kenneth M., 81-year-old male, of Mount Pulaski; 2008 Ford Taurus

Jackson said she was southbound on Kickapoo at the intersection of Keokuk while Holmes was northbound on Kickapoo, attempting a left-hand turn. Jackson said that she had the green light and was passing through the intersection and stuck Holmes.

Holmes said that he had a green turn light and had nearly completed his turn when Jackson entered the intersection, striking his vehicle on the rear passenger-side quarter panel.

July 7

Accident occurred on North Kickapoo 179 feet south of Yosemite Avenue at 3:14 p.m.

  • Bailey, Jerry F., 60-year-old male, of Lincoln; 1996 Dodge Dakota

  • Snodgrass, Paula K., 48-year-old female, of Lincoln; 2000 Ford Explorer

Bailey was northbound on North Kickapoo, approaching Snodgrass from behind. Snodgrass was yielding to southbound traffic as she awaited an opportunity to turn off Kickapoo. Bailey failed to reduce his speed and rear-ended the Snodgrass vehicle.

Bailey was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

July 12

Accident occurred at 925 Primm Road at 9:45 a.m.

  • Prather, Lorena B., 86-year-old female, of Lincoln; 1986 Chrysler LHS

  • Howerton, Marian M., 70-year-old female, of Lincoln; 2002 Hyundai Sante Fe

The Howerton vehicle was legally parked along the side of the roadway. Prather was parked in a parking space nearby. When she backed out of the space, she hit the Howerton vehicle.

A witness said that Prather got out of her vehicle, checked for damage, then drove away.

When Prather returned later and was questioned about the incident, she said that she heard a noise as she was backing, stopped and checked for damage and found none.

Prather was ticketed for operating an uninsured vehicle and for leaving the scene of an accident.

July 12

Accident occurred at 10:33 a.m. on South Kickapoo at Decatur Street

  • McAfee, Jason L., 38-year-old male, of Springfield; 2007 International owned by the United Parcel Service

  • Haseley, Vernon C., 83-year-old male, of Lincoln; 2004 Mercury Monterey

McAfee was eastbound on Decatur Street, stopped at the sign, then proceeded into the intersection, striking Haseley at the driver's-side door.

Haseley was taken to Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital by the Logan County Paramedic Association.

McAfee was ticketed.

Lincoln Police Department reports for Tuesday, July 13

  • Broyles, Cyrenna M., 18-year-old female, of Lincoln, arrested July 13 in the 100 block of Decatur Street on a Logan County warrant for failure to appear. Bond was set at $2,500, 10 percent.

  • Eairheart, Bradley E., 21-year-old male, of Lincoln, arrested July 13 in the 1000 block of Delavan Street on Class X charge of home invasion and Class 1 charge of aggravated battery.

Logan County Sheriff's Department reports for Tuesday, July 13

  • Dehner, Michelle L., 37-year-old female, of Lincoln, arrested July 12 at 1850th Street and Old Route 121 on Class A charge of driving under the influence, Class A charge of possession of drug paraphernalia and Class B charge of possession of cannabis 2.5 to 10 grams.

  • Johnson, Cherilea K., 50-year-old female, of Middletown, arrested July 12 at her residence on Class C charge of disorderly conduct.

  • Nelson, Alexander J., 23-year-old male, of Beason, arrested July 12 at his residence on Class A charge of domestic battery, Class A charge of unlawful production and possession of cannabis plants, Class C charge of assault, and Class A charge of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held without bond.

Illinois State Police report for Tuesday, July 13

  • Butler, Duane, 51-year-old male, of Carbon Hill, Ala., arrested July 12 on I-155 in the southbound lanes just south of Exit 10 on Class A charge of driving under the influence. He was also cited for improper lane usage and improper mirrors. Vehicle was towed from the scene.
