[July 22, 2010]  (AP)  Stormy weather in the Northeast was forecast to taper off Thursday as the low pressure system affecting the region exited offshore.

InsuranceSome lingering showers and thunderstorms were expected through the morning hours and the early afternoon. Afterward, high pressure from the Southeast would usher a drier air mass over the region.

Behind this activity, another low pressure trough from the northern Rockies would move eastward into the northern Plains. An associated warm front would kick up showers, periodic heavy rainfall and thunderstorms as it reached across the region into the mid-Mississippi and Ohio valleys. Forecasters said storms from the northern and central Plains through the Midwest may turn severe with damaging winds and hail. The low over the northern Plains was expected to reach the upper Great Lakes by Thursday night.

To the south, increasing moisture would spread across the southern Plains on Thursday, bringing scattered showers and areas of heavy rainfall to southeastern Texas.

In the West, monsoon moisture would keep chances of showers and thunderstorms over portions of the Southwest and the central and southern Rockies. Meanwhile, areas along the coast would see more fog and cool daytime highs, while fairer weather would persist across the inland areas of the West Coast states.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 28 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 118 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
