In
this March 9, 1950, file photo, Sen. Joseph McCarthy gestures during a Senate
subcommittee hearing in Washington, D.C., on McCarthy's charges of communist
infiltration of the U.S. State Department. The Pond, one of America's most
secretive espionage agencies, was designed to be relatively small and operate
out of the limelight, but rivals questioned its sources, and ultimately it
became discredited because its pugnacious leader was too cozy with Sen. Joseph
McCarthy and other radical anti-communists. Papers from the Pond organization
have become public.
