Bernadine Houghton

[March 31, 2011]  ATLANTA -- Bernadine T. Houghton, 94, formerly of Atlanta, died Friday, March 25, 2011, at 5:48 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio. She had been ill with pneumonia for two days.

Her family will receive relatives and friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 3, at Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m., with L.C. Sutton officiating.

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 4, in Mountjoy Cemetery, Logan County.

Mrs. Houghton was a retired homemaker and had been a secretary.

The daughter of Roy H. and Mona B. Bishop Thompson, Bernadine Thompson was born on the family farm in Eminence Township, Logan County, on July 17, 1916. She married Eldon E. Houghton on Aug. 6, 1936.

She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Chapman (and husband Samuel) of Reno, Nev.; two granddaughters, Laura Hughes Wynia (and husband Scott) of Hilliard, Ohio, and Lisa Hughes Kouta (and husband Ehab) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; eight great-grandchildren, Nathanael, Benjamin, Elisabeth, Timothy and Stephanie Wynia, Brian and David Campbell, and Rebecca Boggs; her brother, Jim Thompson (and wife Marian) of Atlanta; and eight nieces and nephews.

Bernadine graduated from Atlanta High School in 1934 and attended Gregg Business College in Chicago, graduating from the competency-based secretarial science program when she passed exams in typing, shorthand and business English.

She worked as a legal secretary for Frank Bevan in Atlanta for two years prior to her marriage. Later she was an executive secretary for the vice president of Cussins & Fearn Co. in Columbus, Ohio, from 1956 to 1962.

Throughout her life, Bernadine was a member of Christian churches, often serving as pianist, organist and Sunday school teacher. She generously shared her skills as musician, seamstress, gardener and flower arranger with family and friends. She was a Girl Scout leader in Springfield, Grove City, Ohio, and Falls Church, Va.

Over the years, due to her husband's employment, they lived in Dunlap, Springfield, Grove City, Ohio, Falls Church, Va., and Columbus, Ohio. Following his retirement, they lived in Port Richey, Fla., for 13 years. They moved to Worthington Christian Colony on the north edge of Columbus, Ohio, in 1995.

The loving care provided by the staff of Worthington Christian Village in Columbus, Ohio, was greatly appreciated by Bernadine and her family. She had been a resident since April 2003 and in the skilled care unit since December 2008.
