William 'Bill' Slayton Jr.

[April 11, 2011]  LINCOLN -- William H. "Bill" Slayton Jr., 69, of Lincoln, died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield, surrounded by the love of his family.

A memorial gathering will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Holland Barry & Bennett Funeral Home in Lincoln, followed by a service at 7 p.m.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Mr. Slayton retired from Laborers Local 895 after 55 years. He then was a transportation driver for Community Action. He loved the people that he encountered through Community Action and loved his job there.

He was born Sept. 10, 1941, in Lincoln. His parents were William H. Slayton Sr. and Ruth Louise Sapp Slayton. He married Patricia Sue Cook on June 18, 1960. They celebrated 50 love-filled years of marriage.

He is survived by his wife, of Lincoln; one son, William H. "Billy" Slayton III (and Carolyn) of Mount Pulaski; two daughters, Kimmy Lucas of Lincoln and Shelley Lynn Lemme-Luster of Lincoln; grandchildren Amanda Rogers of Lincoln, Vesta Slayton of Mount Pulaski, Ami Lucas of Lincoln, Krista Slayton of Lincoln, Thomas Slayton of Mount Pulaski, Stephanie Slayton of Mount Pulaski, Scott Lemme of Lincoln, Nolan Slayton of Mount Pulaski, and twins Luke and Lynzie Luster of Lincoln; great-grandchildren Cameron Nichols of Lincoln, Kiara McCain of Mount Pulaski, Jessalyn McCain of Mount Pulaski and Serenity Cronin of Lincoln; four sisters, JoAnn Cosby of Lincoln, Lucy Smith of Granbury, Texas, Frances Babbs of Lincoln and GeeGee Baker of Lincoln; one brother, Thomas Slayton of Lincoln; and his faithful canine companion Nikki.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial donations may be made to the family and will be accepted at the funeral home.
