Controversial issues:
As a

matters that affect the quality of our lives. The
most effective and least offensive manner to get

To the editor: Last week Lincoln Community High School had some
great news for our students, staff and community. The senior Class
of 2012 posted the highest collective ACT average since 2007 --21.3,
versus the state average of 20.9. This test reflects the achievement
of our future graduates and is an indication of the extent to which
they are prepared for college-level work. The ACT consists of
curriculum-based tests of educational development in English (21.3
versus 20.6 state average), mathematics (21.2 versus 20.9 state
average), reading (21.1 versus 20.8 state average) and science (21.0
versus 20.7 state average).
I think this is great news and says a lot about the excellent
work that our staff and students are doing. Our composite score of
21.3 is 0.4 higher than last year and continues our school’s trend
of long-term incremental gains since we began testing all students
using the ACT as part of the Prairie State Achievement Exam in 2001.

I know many critics of public education like to dwell on the
negatives, but I believe education is alive and well at Lincoln
Community High School, and we have much going in the right
direction.
Do we need to continue to do a better job of educating all
students for college and career readiness? Absolutely. As we
implement the new Illinois Learning Standards based on the Common
Core and raise expectations for our students across the board, we
will continue to move in the right direction. Go, Railers!

Superintendent, LCHS District 404
