Dr. George Smith

[January 19, 2011]  LINCOLN -- George "Doc" N. Smith, D.D.S., 72, of Lincoln, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at 12:54 a.m. at St. Clara's Manor.

A memorial service for Dr. Smith will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at American Legion Post 263, 1740 Fifth St.

Prior to the service, family will greet friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Peasley Funeral Home in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.

Dr. Smith started his dental practice in Stockton and Mount Morris. He was employed at Dixon Developmental Center beginning in 1974 and then transferred to the Lincoln Developmental Center in 1982. He retired from LDC in 1991. After retirement he worked with the dental practices of Dr. Robert Dahman and Dr. Todd Walker.

He served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War.

George Norman Smith was born on May 28, 1938, in Freeport. His parents were Charles Leslie and Grace Smith. He married Arta L. Machamer on Sept. 9, 1966, in Mount Morris.

He is survived by his wife; one stepdaughter, Patricia (and Denny) O'Boyle of Chillicothe; two stepgrandsons, Dr. David P. (and Rachel) Wickness of Champaign and Scott M. Wickness of Denver, Colo.; two step-great-grandchildren, Marissa Wickness and Ava Wickness; and one brother, James C. Smith of Mount Morris.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a member of American Legion Post 263 in Lincoln, the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Oregon, Ill., and a former member of Lincoln Elks Lodge 914.

His hobbies included golfing and reading.

Funeral Director

He graduated from Mount Morris High School and attended Grinnell College in Iowa, Northern Illinois University and Rockford College. He graduated from the University of Illinois School of Dentistry in Chicago.
