[January 27, 2011]  The Knights of Columbus will start up their popular fish baskets this Friday, Jan. 28, beginning at 5 p.m. at their hall, 217 N. Limit. The baskets are either catfish for $8 or walleye for $7. Baskets include slaw, baked beans bread and a choice of potato. Dates for the baskets are Jan. 28; Feb. 4, 11 and 18; March 11, 18 and 25; and April 1, 8, 15 and 22.

Lincoln Community High School faculty and staff will have a benefit for staff member Julia Trone at the Lincoln versus Southeast Spartans boys basketball game Friday, Jan. 28. Julia is currently undergoing treatment for leukemia and is soon to undergo a bone marrow transplant.

The benefit includes the following:

  • The LCHS Band Booster Club is making a monetary donation from money raised at the concession stand.

  • The LCHS Boys Basketball Booster Club is making a monetary donation from money raised during the game.

  • The LCHS faculty and staff will attempt to match the proceeds from the ticket gate with monetary donations collected during the game.

All proceeds will go to Julia to help offset the financial burden of the bone marrow transplant.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at the game for $1 each. A person can put as many chances toward a basket as desired. Winner will be drawn between halftime and the third quarter and will be announced between the third and fourth quarters.

A "Cupcakes with Love" workshop for ages 8 and older will be offered by University of Illinois Extension on Thursday, Feb. 10, from 6 to 7 p.m. Participants will learn to decorate cupcakes with different icing tips and other embellishments with a Valentine or love theme and will take home four to six different cupcake designs.

A maximum of 10 registrations will be accepted. The cost is $5.

Advance registration and payment is requested by Feb. 4 so that supplies can be purchased. To register for the cupcake workshop, contact the Extension office at 732-8289.


MOUNT PULASKI -- Alec Murphy has been named January Senior-of-the-Month at Mount Pulaski High School. Alec is the son of Kevin and Rosemarie Murphy of Beason.

Alec is an honor roll student who has been an active member of the senior class, participating in National Honor Society, Spanish Club, WYSE academic team and Spirit Club. He has also been a four-year member of the FFA and in previous years was a member of his church youth group.

Alec plans to attend Parkland College and the University of Illinois to earn a degree in agricultural business.

The Senior-of-the-Month program is co-sponsored by Johnson's Food Center of Mount Pulaski and Mount Pulaski Pharmacy. Monthly winners receive $100 savings bonds and are eligible to compete for the $1,000 Senior-of-the-Year award.


The Lincoln Christian University Theatre Department announces cast for the spring musical, "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" (revised version):

Show dates are March 24, 25 and 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Earl C Hargrove Chapel Auditorium.

Tickets prices are $7 for adults and $6 for students through college. Group rates are available.
